Upper Dolpo Trekking is one of the best trekking in Nepal done in remote and mysterious region in far western Nepal. It is tranquil and its natural beauty is still unspoiled and unexplored. It is regarded as homeland of Herbs. Flight to Nepalgunj and again fly to Jhupal and start trekking in Dolpa Region. It posses rich diversity in nature and culture. The main highlight of this trek is to experience trans-Himalayan culture and unique human civilization with nature’s pleasure. One can see stunning mountain vistas of Dhaulagiri 1- 8163m, Sita Chuchura 6611m, Nilgiri 6940m, Thapa Peak 6015m, Tukche Peak 6920m, Tilicho peak 7134m, Thorong Peak 6484m, Yakawa Kan 6482m, 7035m, Brikuti 6364m, Chuungian Chanma Himal 6165m, Mustang Himal 66234m, Arniko Chuli 6034m and more snow capped mountains also animals like snow leopard, Blue sheep, Himalayan Black bear and lakes, glaciers, Monastries, history and other. Day 1: Kathmandu Arrival

You will be warmly welcomed by Well Nepal Treks representative at your arrival in Tribhuwan International Airport (TIA), Kathmandu and escorted you to hotel and our representative describe the itinerary of your tour. Stay overnight at hotel.

Day 2: Kathmandu Sightseeing and Trek Preparation (1360m)

Today you are going to  explore the several cultural and natural sightseeing in this ancient city Pashupatinath, Boudhanah Stupa, Swayambunath Stupa and Kathmandu Durbar Square. After exploring this places you will do preparation for trek. Stay overnight at hotel.

Day 3: Fly to Nepalgunj (540 M)

After breakfast you will drive to airport as per the flight schedule for Nepalgunj. At Nepalgunj you will look around the town which is situated on the southern Nepal border with India. It is quite hot and tropical. Explore the surrounding of hotel. Stay overnight at Nepalgunj. 

Day 4: Nepalgunj to Jhufal (2500m), Trek to Dunai (2100 M)

After breakfas you headed to airport to cach your flight for Jhufal as they are always scheduled early in the morning because of high winds in Thulo Bheri Valley. Once you arrive at Jhupal, you start your short trek from Jhupal to Dunai. Marching downhill through meadows and few houses, small hotels at Kala Gaura (2090m). From here you follow the river trail upstream to Dunai. You camp near Dunai and explore this amazing little hill town for the rest of day. 

Day 5: Dunai to Hanke (2660 M)

After breakfast you will trek about 6-7 hours to reach Hanke. You will follow the route of the confluence of the Thuri Bheri and Suli Gad rivers and follow the Suli Gad River also walk through some nice villages such as Parela, Rahagaon, and Ankhe. Eventually, you will arrive at Hanke, which is also the entry point of Shey Phoksundo National Park. Stay overnight at Hanke. 

Day 6: Trek to Sumdo (3200 M)

After breakfast you headed to Sumdo along  crossing the river twice on well made bridges, you then make a steep ascent on a very narrow path hugging the cliff face. Having descended to the river again the trail takes another steep ascent requiring frequent stops to watch the panorama of the landscapes and also for some rest. After a long walk for about 6 hour you reach at Sumdo. Stay overnight at Sumdo. 

Day 7: Sumdo to Shey Phoksundo Lake (3738 M)

After breakfast you trail uphill which is steep and ascend through ridge from where waterfalls and view of Shey Phoksundo Lake is seen. You descend through the forest through the village of Ringmo and you rest at the shores of Phoksundo Lake. Stay overnight at Shey Phoksundo Lake. 

Day 8: Acclimatization Day at Shey Phoksundo (3738 M)

Today is your rest day but we recommend you visit the surroundings of this lake. We admire the beauty of this great lake and head to visit nearby villages inhabited by Bon and Buddhist Settlers. Stay overnight at Shey Phoksundo. 

Day 9: Trek to Ringmo to Phoksundo Khola (3500M)

After breakfast you will trail that skirts the edge of the lake itself and going very steeply up and then plunge down again to the valley bottom to enter the flood plain of the Phoksundo Khola and trek to your night stop alongside the river. Stay overnight at Phoksundo Khola.  

Day 10: Phoksundo Khola to Phoksundo Bhanjyang (4400 M)

After breakfast you walk along the glacial valley to north. You pass by the Phoksundo River and other glacial streams that rush down the steep valley, then through sheep meadows up to another valley from where Kang La Pass is viewed. Finally you reach at village of Phoksundo. Stay overnight at Phoksundo Bhanjyang. 

Day 11: Bhanjyang to Shey Gompa (4126 M) via Kang la Pass

After breakfast you trail up very steeply. It will take 2/3 hours to reach the top of the Kang La from where the views are magnificent with those great strength and effort. You now descend to valley floor and trek along the banks of the river and finally you arrive at Shey Gompa. Stay overnight at Kang La Pass.

Day 12: Rest day Shey Gompa

As Shey means crystal so monastery is also known as the Crystal Mountain. The monastery was built during the 11th century which belongs to the Chaiba community, followers of the Padmasambhava and Kagyu sects. Shey is famous for its ancient Buddhist culture. Crystal Mountain is to the west of Shey monastery. It is a very strange mountain indeed. Its contorted cliffs are laced with quartz and embedded with a rich variety of marine fossils. Shey Gompa stands above the confluence of Kangju nala and Yeju nala. Near the confluence there is a group of prayer mills turned by water wheels. After knowing about place, monastery and nearby places. Stay overnight at Shey Gompa. 

Day 13: Shey Gompa to Namduna Gaun (4400 M)

After brekfast you trail towards Namduna Village. You arrive at Saldang La pass after few hours of walk and descend downward to Yak grazing fields. Along the way you encounter Namduna Monastery and after visiting it you head down to its valley and settle at Namduna village. This is an agricultural land too. Stay overnight at Namduna Gaun. 

Day 14: Namduna Gaun to Saldang (3900 M)

After breakfast you leave Namduna Gaun and follow your trails to dusty Barren Mountain and after 4 hour you arrive at Namkhong Mala from where Saldang seems spectacular. You climb down and reach Saldang. It is combo of six villages which is prosperous in agriculturally and because of its landscape for perfect Tibet trade route. Stay overnight at Saldang. 

Day 15: Saldang to Yangze Gompa

After breakfast you trail to further north to the least unexplored area by westerners or agencies. You follow the Nang Chu River, and then passing through the small settlement of Tiling and Lurigaon. Passing through Panzang River, old Bon-Po Monastery and other villages, You reach to Yangze and visit its Gompa. Stay overnight at Yangze Gompa.

Day 16: Yangze Gompa to Sibu (4000 M)

After breakfast you trail all the way down to the river bed you pass through terraced fields, stupas, Chortens, heaps of mani stones, Chaiba monastery, Namdo Village, Nam Khong Khola, Namdo monastery which is located near the river bed finally You arrive at Sibu. You camp near the small settlement of Sibu, right on the river bank. Stay overnight at Sibu.

Day 17: Sibu to Jeng La Phedi (4480 M)

After breakfast you will follows the trail to Nam Khong Khola for a while on the morning walk coming across caravan of laden yaks that are on their way towards Tibet border. After days of following the same river, finally you part turning east till you arrive at the confluence of two small tributaries, from here our walk leads to a steep climb to the bottom of Jeng la (4,900m/16,072ft), Stay overnight at Jeng La Phedi.

Day 18: Jeng la Phedi to Tokyu Gaun (4240 M)

After breakfast you headed to Tokyu  Gaun cross Jeng la pass in morning and follow our trails to steep down to Tarap Valley and Tarap chu River. Tarap is also known as the dream valley with vast plains in high valley. Then you follow your trails and rest at Tokyu monastery of Chaiba’s. Tokyu is combination of ten villages and many stupas, Gompas, hortens and many more. Stay overnight at Tokyu Gaun.

Day 19: Tokyo Gaun to Dho Tarap (4100 M)

After breakfast you continue your walk through the hill side of Tarap chu to green valley and following it we reach at the Dho tarap where people of both Bon Po and Chaiba live in harmony and explore this area. Along the way you enjoy great scenery of Tibet mountains and Ladakh Himalaya. Stay overnight at Dho Tarap.

Day 20: Dho Tarap to Khani Gaun (2550 M)

After breakfast you continue your trails down the gorge of Tarap river and follow the rough trails and after long walk of 7 hour you settle at pleasant meadows of Khani Gaun. Stay overnight at Khani Gaun.

Day 21: Khani Gaun to Tarakot (2280 M)

After breakfast you leave Khani Gaun by the new suspension bridge and then walk alongside the river, sometimes going very high before reaching down to the water again. Some of the going is quite demanding and one bridge, said to have unusable for six years, necessitates crossing on wet stepping-stones. Finallly you arrive at Tarakot after walk of about 4 hour. Stay overnight at Tarakot.

Day 22: Tarakot to Dunai (2100 M)

After breakfast you head down to Dunai besides the Bheri river in a tremendous Gorge with pine trees and path built just about 7 meter above the river. Finally you arrive at Dunai from where you started your trek. you will recall the pleasures, moments and tough times. Stay overnight at Dunai.

Day 23: Dunai to Jhupal to Nepalgunj

After breakfast you leave Dunai in this morning and fly to Nepalgunj and take another flight from there all the way back to Kathmandu. At night you will  have a dinner in Nepali kitchen with your teammates with Nepali music. Stay overnight at hotel.

Day 24: Leisure at Kathmandu

Today will be your relaxation day at beautiful Kathmandu. You can enjoy drinks or pubs or relax in hotel or explore Thamel or go for shopping and rest. Stay overnight at hotel. 

Day 25: Departure

Today your Upper Dolpo Trekking comes to an end so collects the photographs and gadget. Then our representative will help you to drop to the airport or if you have plenty of time to spend in Nepal, then feel free us to join another trip or adventurous activities like hiking, river rafting, bunjy jumping, paragliding etc.

General Informations

A trekker who is able to hike and trek normally 5-6 hours per day with a light weight backpack will be very fit enough to perform this trekking. There may be stone steps, ups and downs, rocky paths and which are very uneven and also because of long trails your leg may feel tired and shaky so we strongly recommend you to use walking poles and trek sticks to feel safer and to maintain the pace. You will be informed about altitude and you should be more careful about your health and altitude related risk. To get rid of it, acclimatize as well as walk slowly and have more water and other drinks to maintain yourself hydrated.

Equipments Required

Trekking Accessories- Trekking Bag pack, Trekking day bag (Small handbag), Trekking stick, Trekking jacket Gore tax/ flees jacket, Sleeping bag, etc

Footwear - Trekking shoes, Camping Shoes, Sports shoes or comfortable sandal, 4/5 pairs of good qualities socks, etc

Cosmetics - Sun cream, Body Lotion, Moisturizers, lip balm, Mirror Wet Tissue Papers, Soap, Perfumes, and Tooth brush etc.

Clothes - Pullover or warm sweeter, Sun Hat, Warm woolen cap, Raincoat, Hand gloves, 2/3 pairs of Trekking trousers, 3/4 pairs of trekking shirts, 3/4 pairs of Underwear, etc.

Gears - Flash or Torch light, Head Torch lights, lighters, Chargers, Camera and batteries, Eye glass, Water bottle, etc.

Extra – IPods, Binoculars, First Aid Kit, Ear Plugs, Pen & diary, Travel Map or GPS, etc as per your requirements and necessities.

Always Drink Safe Water

Well Nepal Treks suggest you to have purified drinking water. Basically, we can get mineral water bottles in lower places but we might not find it in higher ground. In such cases we suggest you to drink boiled water which might charge very tiny fee in tea houses. Bring chlorine tablets to purify water. Recommend yourself to use boiled rather than mineral water which will be helpful for protection of you and healthy environment.

About Recharging Your Batteries & Electronic Devices during Trek

Hydro electricity may not be available in every location, so solar power sources are used to charge your electrical items like camera, batteries, iPod, I phone etc. Several Tea houses or lodges may charge small fee per hours for charging facilities for consumption of electricity or solar power. Well Nepal Treks recommends you to have adaptors and chargers before the trip since plugs are limited. In Nepal 220-240 volt power is used and sockets fit round and flat plugs.

Garbage Disposal

Well Nepal Treks suggest you to use dustbins and do not throw anything into the fire. Carry a separate garbage carrier in the way and dispose it where dustbin facilities are available and promote the healthy environment.

Travel Insurance

Well Nepal Treks reminds you on your sufficiently protected and have travel insurance that covers emergency evacuation, lost items, liabilities, injuries and medical treatment. Washing and Toilet facilities

Every guest houses offer hot showers in bathroom or can be a bucket of hot water. But please note that at higher altitude there may not be enough hot water for all the trekkers. So you must limit the use of hot water unless the water is solar heated or firewood for the ecological reason. Every lodge has some kind of washing facilities but you must carry a bar of soap. Don’t feel hesitated to get warm bowl of water If the water frozen.

Toilets here are mainly Asian squat style. Basically toilets are outside your room and vary in how clean they are. You should not throw toilet paper in the toilet hole rather you should use rubbish bin that is kept inside the toilet.

Tea Houses

On this trekking route local people have built tea houses lodge with food and beverage facilities. A simple room usually has two narrow beds. Note that while staying in the tea houses you will see the charming local people with their good hospitality services so be friendly in every way possible.

Extra Advice from Well Nepal Treks

You may see some beautiful, sweet children and poor ones that might make you to distribute balloons, chocolates, money and other stuffs. But, Well Nepal Trekssuggest you better not to do so because it directly encourages them towards beggary and ask to every trekker which is also a sign of negative practice.

While on trekking, don’t forget to keep your valuables safe and secure. Do not left anything anywhere. Ensure that you lock your door when you leave your room and do not hang anything’s outside at night. We strongly recommend you to do double check always and anywhere possible.
